How AI Helped Build This Website in Under a Week

The Power of AI in Rapid Development

I built Vancouver People Directory—a platform for local profiles of Vancouver professionals—in less than a week of spare time, and I couldn’t have done it without AI. What would have traditionally taken months of development and content gathering was accomplished in days, thanks to the powerful collaboration between human vision and artificial intelligence.

Designing for Simplicity

One of the first challenges was creating a website that was both functional and elegant. I wanted something clean, fast, and easy to navigate—no cluttered interfaces, no overwhelming features.

AI helped me design the simplest possible architecture:

• A static site generator (Hugo) for lightning-fast performance
• Minimal, responsive templates that work beautifully on any device
• Clear navigation: Home, Labels, People, and now Blog
• No databases to maintain, no complex backends to manage

The result? A website that loads instantly, ranks well on search engines, and lets visitors find what they need without friction.

Curating Content at Scale

The real magic happens behind the scenes. Vancouver People Directory isn’t just a static list—it’s a living, growing collection of professional profiles.

AI continuously helps me gather information about influential professionals across Greater Vancouver from multiple public sources:

• LinkedIn — Professional backgrounds, credentials, and career histories
• YouTube — Video content showcasing expertise and personality
• TikTok — Emerging voices and modern approaches to professional services
• Xiaohongshu (小红书) — Insights into professionals serving the Chinese-speaking community

This multi-platform approach ensures we capture a diverse range of perspectives and expertise that might otherwise be missed.

My Role: Simply Communicating the Vision

Here’s the remarkable part: I don’t write code. I don’t manually research each profile. I don’t design interfaces.

All I do is tell AI what I want:

“I need a website that helps Vancouver residents find trusted professionals in real estate, finance, law, and education. It should be fast, simple, and based entirely on publicly available information.”

From that simple prompt, AI handles:

• Technical architecture decisions
• Template design and coding
• Content structure and organization
• Data collection and formatting
• Quality assurance and consistency checks

I review, provide feedback, and make high-level decisions. AI executes the rest.

Continuous Improvement

The website isn’t finished—it’s evolving. As new professionals emerge and existing ones expand their presence online, AI helps me:

• Identify potential new additions to the directory
• Update existing profiles with fresh information
